Speakers in Code: John Davey

We here at SIC have watched a few of our music-babies grow up right before our eyes. And while we're absent parents most of the time, just visiting these kids when either convenient or prompted to, that doesn't mean in the least that we don't love 'em just like the day the popped, all doe-eyed and bloody from this blog's womb.

John was born to our blog way back in 2012, and oh MY how he's changed while we've been running around sewing our oats! The early recordings we heard carried the same knack for melody and space, but two years have apparently granted him some production skills as well. What seemed to be forming ideas last-go-round are fully formed here, and they sound lush and lively.

"Spent" is a shining example of this. Playful, with a tiny lyrical twang, Davey's phrasing takes center stage, rounding out what is just about the perfect early fall, windows down song here in the south.

Loyal Speakers in Code patrons - I offer you photo-journalistic proof that the "perfect day" is not some sort of mythos. It exists, I tell you, and at least one of these "perfect days" happened Sunday in Chapel Hill. Cast your eyes upon those Carolina-blue skies. Adjust your gaze to the unbelievably talented group of musicians who took to the outdoor stage flanking my abode. Try to imagine the flavor of Basil Farmhouse Ale as it wets your sing-a-long-stretched vocal chords.

Soundtracking this "perfect day," was a group of musicians who brought very different attributes to the musical-table. Nashville's Erin Rae epitomized the singer songwriter ethos - but stood out, really, as a performer, by creating a warm, inviting look into the history of her songs. The proverbial ying to Rae's yang, John Davey's fragile performance showcased his unique, and very welcomed attention to, the fine art of phrasing. Toronto's Animal Parts provided a detailed, and downright hilarious, look into a few of his songs, while performing stripped down, and intimate versions of the more fleshed out recordings he has released.

Lastly, Scotland's Admiral Fallow gave us the final performance of their current US tour, before heading back to their side of the pond. And while it may seem a bit overzealous, or hokey, to those who weren't there, it was truly magical to watch them play songs that breathe the open Scottish air, on a stage backdropped by only blue skies, autumn-colored trees, and a cool breeze that gave intermittent relief from the warm Carolina sun.
