Jam of Day | Tame Impala - Let it Happen

"Let it Happen" is a tantalizing glimpse into Tame Impala's as-of-yet untitled third LP. At nearly 8 minutes, the  track sees Kevin Parker exploring a sprawling psychedelic landscape populated by ghostly synthesizer tones and an infectious dance beat. An irresistible rhythmic pulse permeates the song and it eventually manifests itself as a skittering scratched-CD effect that progresses into a  textural synth chorus. I won't spoil anymore of it, listen below:

St. Louis psych rock fans -- Tame Impala visits The Pageant tomorrow (10/8) to throw down some fuzzy jams; White Denim will open the show. The Australian group is touring off their 2012 release, Lonerism, which might suggest some solo artist expressing regret through song. However, that's not what we have here.



We have two pairs of tickets to give away to the show at The Pageant. To enter, all you need to do is ONE of the following:

Tame Impala's Lonerism is a complex album, there's no doubt about that; but since its release late in 2012, I've felt, every time I listened to it, that it was a complex and contained record, definitely neatened off at the edges, perhaps, or simply just produced with a measure of conspicuous control exercised by Kevin Parker in the studio.

Last night at the Cradle, there was nothing contained or controlled about Tame Impala's set. Both musically and sonically, if you get the difference, it was enormous, off the rails, wild. Every note they played filled every corner of a packed, sweaty, sold out Cat's Cradle -- a wild, dreamlike sonic landscape that took Lonerism's control and let it loose to roll over the crowd. Parker worked two enormous pedal boards with his bare feet -- twisting knobs with his toes! -- and made music like I've never heard before, songs that fill up your chest and your heart until you're overflowing.

Tame Impala is already on the rise, as evidenced by their sold-out tour, and it was a joy to see them last night. Thanks to Shelley at Modular People, I also had the pleasure of shooting them from a rare photo pit at the Cradle, and I can't thank her enough for the chance.

Jam of the Day | The Flaming Lips (feat. Bon Iver) - Ashes In The Air

April 21st, or Record Store Day to those who are awesome, is a magical day for those of us who still love to hold physical albums in our hands. It’s a day where the sun seems to burn a little brighter around doors covered in stickers. The birds chirp along with whistling crooners who imitate them on record. And greying hipsters literally push people out of their way to get to that last signed Polvo record, only because they saw them in some tiny little club in college, before every band on earth started swiping their sound. Yes – it’s a glorious day, and this year, the odds in Vegas are higher than ever that a fight will break out around the "F" section, due to what The Flaming Lips have in store…literally.

The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends will drop on colored vinyl that morning, each totally unique and one of a kind. And if that alone isn’t exciting enough, the record will include collaborations with Ke$ha, Coldplay, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Tame Impala, Jim James, Nick Cave, Neon Indian, Erykah Badu and Bon Iver (which also happens to be our Jam of the Day!)

Check out "Ashes in the Air" below and try to picture Justin Vernon being chased out of his snowy secluded cabin by "robot dogs." It makes the song even better.
